Xiaomi 14T Pro Review: A Better Flagship Phone

Xiaomi 14t pro review camera

The new Xiaomi 14T Pro is a bigger version of the Xiaomi 14 flagship that launched about 6 months ago, with the Snapdragon brain ripped out and replaced with a MediaTek Dimensity-shaped one. The Xiaomi 14T Pro looks, feels, and plays like a premium pant-filler, but hopefully, the price won’t fill too many pants.

Xiaomi 14T Pro is being launched in various countries as part of the global rollout of the Xiaomi 14T Pro. Countries where the Xiaomi 14T series will be available include Italy, Romania, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. These T-series blowouts typically cost less than Google or Samsung-type flagships, not to mention the Xiaomi 14T Pro’s big September rival, all of which are suitably bollocks.

So, the Xiaomi 14T Pro could be a good choice for anyone who wants shiny technology without skinning themselves. I’ve been stuffing my SIMs in there for just over a week now, so here’s my full Xiaomi 14T Pro review and more about the latest and greatest tech.

Xiaomi 14T Pro Design

The Xiaomi 14 flagship was a pleasantly dinky 6.4-inch, sadly this time the Xiaomi 14T Pro is your regular, bog-standard 6.67-inch smartphone. So, one-handed use can be a little difficult as usual, though thankfully, you have that one-handed mode to help. And the Xiaomi 14T Pro is certainly no lightweight—at 207 grams, it’s got the right old weight for it, and Xiaomi continues the trend of going back to proper flat-screen displays for flagship smartphones.

There’s no curvature at the edges and reasonably skinny bezels around that panel, so it’s not a full-on girth nightmare like some of those iPhones. Sadly, like those iPhones, the edges are completely flat, but the Xiaomi 14T Pro is reasonably slim and has some subtle curves around the back edge, which only helps the old-hand feel. The Xiaomi 14T Pro’s design prioritizes comfort, and compared to some bulkier phones, the Xiaomi 14T Pro strikes a good balance between style and usability.

So, for a phone of this size, the Xiaomi 14T Pro is not uncomfortable to clutch. As you’d expect, the Xiaomi 14T Pro has an aluminium alloy frame, with a metallic finish giving you a nice premium look and feel. And then the back, a good bit of glass action with a pleasantly matte finish. I believe the Xiaomi 14T Pro features Gorilla Glass on the front and back as well.

You have a pre-installed screen protector for double protection, and there’s also a nice wee condom case in the box—huzzah. And of course, the Xiaomi 14T Pro boasts full IP68 water and dust resistance, so no worries if it gets wet sitting under your bathtub. You can also grab the Xiaomi 14T Pro in Titan Blue or Titan Black.

If you want to unlock your Xiaomi 14T Pro, there’s the simple in-display optical fingerprint sensor. Absolutely zero complaints about it—it’s nice and responsive, as you’ll see. Like Face Unlock, it’s surprisingly nippy in fact, and you hardly ever see that lock screen.

If you’re a bit of a movie buff, you’ll probably enjoy the 6.67-inch AMOLED screen that the 14T Pro offers. It may be a big bugger, but it’s also a crispy bugger. The 2712 by 1220 pixels resolution keeps those visuals sharp, and that’s proper premium visuals too. The 14T Pro supports 12-bit color depth, as well as HDR10 Plus and Dolby Vision streaming with services like Netflix.

Now, those visuals are nice and natural at the default Original Color Pro display settings. The colours can be quite poppy when needed, but overall, there’s a more realistic feel. If you like those visuals to slap you in the face, you can liven up the color scheme on the Xiaomi 14T Pro.

If you do a bit of photo editing or something, you can set the display to something like P3 Gamut or sRGB, and mess with hue, saturation—everything. The level of customization is very impressive, and this screen is powerfully bright too. Even on sunny days, I had no problem seeing what was going on outside on the 14T Pro.

You’ve got some PWM dimming action, and this screen is apparently flicker-free, certified by TUV Rheinland (don’t know how to say it). And you’ve got refresh rate support up to 144Hz for any app that can handle it.

The Xiaomi 14T Pro also comes with a proper stereo speaker setup along with Dolby Atmos support and Hi-Res Audio certification

Xiaomi 14T Pro HyperOS & Features

Xiaomi 14T Pro HyperOS & Features

On the software side, no surprises—it’s the usual HyperOS shenanigans sat on top of Android 14. And HyperOS still feels pretty slick compared with some of the heavier launchers out there, certainly. Zipping around through your apps, your various menus, and everything is all nice and smooth.

You’ll see the occasional little glitch or quirk, but certainly nothing unsettling. I haven’t had any app crashes or anything like that during my time with the Xiaomi 14T Pro thus far. These days, Xiaomi thankfully takes updates a lot more seriously than it used to, so you’ll be getting several years of OS updates and security patches on the Xiaomi 14T Pro to keep it fresh for the long haul.

Now, you’ve got Google’s Gemini assistant pre-installed on the Xiaomi 14T Pro, but sadly you don’t get the free year of Gemini Advanced subscription chucked in like you do when you spaff a load of money on one of Google’s Pixel smartphones.

Xiaomi 14T Pro Performance & Gaming

Xiaomi 14T Pro Performance & Gaming

The Xiaomi 14T Pro is now powered by MediaTek’s beefy Dimensity 9300 Plus. The memory extension now goes up to 12GB, and it uses the same UFS 4.0 storage. Daily performance is just fine. There are a few wee bits of slowdown here and there, for example, if I’m messing with another app while streaming a video, but overall, it does the job nicely.

When you play games like Wuthering Waves, this thing puts any smartphone through its paces. I felt that the performance was really strong, even at the highest graphics settings with 60fps on the go. However, I found the frame rate stuttered a bit. The dimensionality of the chip, because it’s all large cores, means the heat build-up here is quite substantial. So, even with Xiaomi’s 3D Ice Lube coolant setup, the Xiaomi 14T Pro can get toasty quickly.

Thankfully, the performance didn’t seem to suffer too much. I had a few more wee stumbles here and there in the frame rates, but overall, the action was fairly smooth, and the phone didn’t get so hot that the game crashed, the phone shut down, or my fingers soldered to the back of it. But I’d say maybe try and get some sort of cooling fan accessory or something to pat yourself on the back with if you’re going to be gaming for hours at a time.

And yes, you have that HyperOS gaming mode here too, which is pretty nifty. It has the old performance-boosting tools—you can screen grab, don’t disturb, you know, all the usual stuff.

Xiaomi 14T Pro Camera

Xiaomi 14T Pro Camera

You have the usual Leica Vario-Summilux camera setup, which feels rather stylish. The primary shooter is a 50MP LightFusion 900 sensor, similar to the Xiaomi 14 from earlier in the year, and is particularly impressive when it comes to color reproduction in soft light. You’ll notice a little bit of creeping grain at times.

Main Photo

Usually, you get a nice natural-looking image with fine detail, so even if you blow them up, they still look good. What I like is that you can compare this to the artificially bright images you’ll get from the likes of Apple, etc.

You’ve got a couple of lens options, including a 50-megapixel telephoto shooter that tops out at 30x combined zoom, which is great for getting a little closer to your subject without blurring it. Always handy whether you’re trying to snap a pet or just a random seagull for whatever reason. However, you’ll want to stop zooming long before the 30x ceiling to avoid the inevitable blurry mess.

You’ve also got a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle shooter that can capture tones as naturally as that main LightFusion shooter, and of course, a plethora of bonus camera modes, including portrait mode. You’ve got the good old Master Portrait mode with a choice of four different focal lengths. While it can capture some great-looking snaps of you, it also offers the usual nice spot of bokeh-style blur when pointing it out.

You’ve got regular video mode where you can record 8K resolution footage at 24 or 30 frames per second. Otherwise, you can boost it to 4K, which goes up to 60fps, unless you want some HDR action, in which case it tops out at 4K 30fps. It can certainly record some slick-looking footage at 4K resolution, especially when you’re moving and shooting, with plenty of fine detail and excellent stabilization.

Xiaomi 14T Pro Battery

As for battery life, you’ll find a 5000mAh capacity cell inside the Xiaomi 14T Pro. I found the battery life to be a bit iffy for my first two or three days with this phone, but thankfully, that’s been put to bed, and now I can get a pretty intense day’s worth of work out of a single charge. No worries—usually, I stumble into bed with around 30 percent left. Unless, of course, I’m playing Wuthering Waves or something else that drains the battery pretty quickly.

There’s no real stress even if you’re running low on juice because you’ve got Xiaomi’s Hypercharge support here, 120W when you bang a cable in there so you’ll be fully drained again within an hour. You’ve also got 50W wireless charging support so if you’re really into wireless charging They can handle it if they get the pad.

Verdict

I’ve had the new Xiaomi 14T Pro for just over a week, using it as my full-time smartphone, and I have to say that I’ve enjoyed my time with it—especially compared to all the other premium phones like the Pixels or Samsung models. It’s not the ultimate flagship phone in style that you can get out there right now, but hopefully, it’ll cost you a bit less than Samsung and the rest.

I like the natural look and output of the camera tech. If you’re a videographer, you have a variety of video options where performance is good, although it does start to get a bit hot under the collar, especially with games like Wuthering Waves, which can be problematic for battery life. I also love the lack of crapware, as well as the slick HyperOS experience.

Should you upgrade?

I like the Xiaomi 14T Pro, but I wouldn’t recommend buying it. At $1,449 for the 12GB + 256GB model, you can get a better phone for $200 less. There’s no need to spend an extra $200 at all. For example, you can get Samsung’s latest Galaxy S24 Ultra, which offers the same 12GB + 256GB configuration for $1,299. Or, you can go for the OnePlus 12, which is priced at just $799 for the same specs—saving you a significant amount. Now, it’s up to you to decide what you want.
